Introduction[]

Jullyann Inderia Gordon (b. 1977), also known as Jully Black, is a Canadian activist, motivational speaker and rhythm and blues (R&B) singer/songwriter. Known for her early 2000s musical career, she has shifted her focus on advocating for marginalized groups, including racial minorities and the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Early Life[]

Childhood[]

Having grown up in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood in Toronto, Canada, Black was known for her love of music, and to impress friends with her euphonious vocals. From her early years, she has practiced pentecostal christianity.

Family Life[]

Before Black was born, her parents had immigrated from Jamaica to Toronto. Her family is known to have a devastating past, with many family members passing away at young ages, including many of her nine sisters. She is a conqueror of child sexual abuse.

Activism Accomplishments[]

Black is well-known to incorporate activism in her music, for example, with empowering song lyrics and a special Black Lives Matter peaceful protest video from the 2009 hit "Running", both of which aim to promote equality and spread awareness. She is also recognized for her popular motivational speaking events, and has even been featured on Canada's Global News with the title "Personal Transformational Coach". She has put her website to use (jullyblack.ca) with a blog and event page used for spreading awareness about upcoming activism matters.
